Bariatric Surgery
Insurance and Financing
There are many ways patients cover the cost of their surgery. Some have insurance benefits that cover weight loss surgery, while others pay out of pocket. There may also be other resources available to you such as government or federal programs or agencies that may be able to assist you. Read some our patient's comments about how they obtained their surgery. PLEASE NOTE: These are comments posted by the public. We do not endorse or recommend any of the companies or agencies below.

The insurance company was sympathic. Unfortunately it is my employer Johnson Controls that has any type of weight loss assistance or surgery excluded from their group policy. (Cathy W.)
- Blue Cross and Blue Sheild Federal Emp. Program (OK) - 05/19/04
I had called our insurance before I ever started to check out this surgery to see if they covered it. They asked my weight and problems . I had type 2 diabetes, I had already had 5 by passes open heart surgery the year before. They told me yes they would cover it. So after all of my testing and semenars were done My dr's office called the insurance company and they appoved it over the phone . No letters needed I had a letter from my Primary care physician and a realese from my cardiologist. I personal letter but they didn't even ask for them. I would recomend to any one who is considering this call your insurance company and let them know ahead of time that your primary care physician recomends it and all of your health risks that you may have. I had no problems. I thank God for that. (SHARON K.)

- United Healthcare (OK) - 08/02/2007
I had no problem with my approval, once I got my documents and history in order. United Healthcare was very good at working with my surgeon to approve in a timely manner. (Cathy G.)
- Waterstone (OK) - 01/03/06
I was denied after the first letter because they (the old insurance co. which was First Health Coventry)stated that I needed to be on a doctor supervised diet for 3 months, then I found out that there was a doctor in network and who practiced at an in network hospital. I further found out that the insurance company had been bought out and that the new insurance company would cover it and didn't need all of the things that the other insurance co. had me do. I am now waiting on approval for the lap band(which the old insurance co. did not cover, but was my original choice). This new insurance company is much better and are locally available and I only have one person that handles this type of surgery and we are on a first name basis. She has been very patient with me so far. (Chalae T.)
